Emergency Weather Day Expectations & E-Learning Days

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As we enter the winter months, School District 89 would like to update you on some of the factors that contribute to calling an emergency weather day in the event of inclement weather, and when you can expect to be notified.

In the event of an emergency weather day where travel is deemed hazardous, it is our intention to have an E-Learning Day in its place. Students will engage in learning from home, virtually, on an inclement weather day to maintain continuity of learning. An E-Learning Day is a full day of learning and, therefore, the emergency day would not need to be made up at the end of the school year.

In general, we will plan for our school to be open on a regular basis. Please do not call the school or school district office to see if school is closed. We will decide if school is to be closed and communicate that decision as early as possible through our usual channels – our robo-call telephone system, our district web site, and the local and regional television and radio stations (WBBM-780 AM, WGN 720, WIND – 560 and channels 2, 5, 7, 9, and 32). Families may also check the following web site for emergency closing information: https://www.emergencyclosingcenter.com/

For real-time, official information regarding school closures, please follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook, and visit our website.

District 89 has a long history of remaining open during challenging weather times. Having said this, there may be an occasion when school would have to be closed because of extreme weather conditions. If this is the case, a decision to close will normally be made by 6:00 a.m., based on road conditions, weather reports, and personal inspections of streets and campuses by District 89 personnel.

As a reminder, during morning arrival, students are allowed into the building at 8:35am. If the weather is severe, children will be allowed in early. Recess will be held indoors when the temperature falls below 20˚F. Please make sure you children dress appropriately for the weather.

Please notify your school(s) immediately whenever you change any of your personal contact information so that you will get the robo-calls, text messages and emails regarding potential school closings.

As always, the safety and security of our students and staff remains a top priority of District 89 and our community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Algeanna Griffin

Principal
